Modern Sliding Doors on a Budget!

Okay, I am SO excited about this one! You guys know I love doing DIY budget furniture builds, especially the ones you send to me as suggestions, but this time, I have a project that I’ve been wanting to do for myself for a while. I think you’re gonna LOVE it! That’s because this one is practical as well as stylish!

That’s right; I am FINALLY tackling sliding doors! See how I do it…

What do you need?

  • 4 planks of wood per door (and more for the wall brackets)
  • A sheet of wood per door
  • The panels you want to cover it with
  • Drill and screws
  • Glue and glue gun
  • Metal railings/track
  • Sliding mechanisms (2 per door)
  • Spirit level

Let me show you how:

1. I bought my planks already cut in the shape I wanted them, but if you haven’t done that, cut them to shape. Then, overlay the two width pieces on the length pieces and screw them together - this makes the door frame. See, we’re so far already!!

2. Grab your sheet of wood (if it doesn’t already fit perfectly, cut it to shape) and screw it to the frame you just made.

3. This step is optional, but I didn’t want to see the sliding mechanism on my doors, so I made sure that the sheet of wood was a little longer than the doors themselves. That way, it hides the sliders!

4. Now for the fun bit! Get the panels you are covering your door with and glue them to the sheet. You will probably have to do some cutting to cover the entire door.

5. Ready to tackle the mechanics?! Okay, so one part of the sliding mechanism needs to be screwed to the door itself, and the other sits in the track on the wall - then they come together to make sliding perfection! It’s the bit with the wheels that sits in the track, so decide where you want the sliders to sit on your door and then screw the other bit onto the top of the wooden frame (not the panels or the sheet of wood).

6. So, the next step is to take the track that the slider will sit inside of and screw it to the wall! Remember to use a spirit level for this otherwise, it won’t work!

7. The easiest way of hanging these doors is to first connect the two pieces of the sliding mechanism (the bit we screwed into the wood and the bit with wheels), and then carefully manoeuver the door until the wheels slot into place on the track!

8. And that’s it… unless you have another door to do like me! But that was so easy, right?! Right!

This came out exactly as I wanted it to, and I’m SO happy with it. It really makes a huge difference to my room, and I KNOW it will for you as well! I hope you love it as much as I do!
