Tavolo Morbido DIY Coffee Table CHALLENGE!

Are you wanting to add some practicality AND some pizzazz to your home? Because I have the PERFECT DIY build for you! The CUTEST coffee table that would usually be over $5,000! But you know me, and I would never allow that… not when we can make one for a tiny fraction of the price!

So, using the Tavolo Morbid coffee table from Studio Mignone as inspiration, let’s get DIYing!

What do you need?

Let’s get making!!

1. Take your food containers and fill them with foam - remember not to fill them to the top because this foam will expand SO much! Leave it for a while to allow that to happen, then when it’s dry, if it’s overflowed at all - cut the tops off to make it straight on top!

2. Then put one container on top of the other (so that it makes a cube shape) and superglue them in place (maybe also use some tape to make it extra secure).

3. Sand down the whole cube to make the plastic rougher - this will let the joint compound stick better!

4. Now mix up the joint compound and then slather it all over the whole cube - be generous as you don’t want it to be too thin and then crack! Do this for all four, and then leave them to dry.

5. Grab the aluminium foil - it’s time to make the corner where the glass will sit! So, make a little sausage shape with the foil, then take a piece of paper and make a curved angle (you can do this by tracing the corner of one of the food containers). Mould the foil around this curved edge, then stick it down and cover it with more joint compound.

6. Use a scraper-type tool to flatten out the top and over the whole cube.

7. Then sandpaper the whole thing so it is silky smooth!

8. Take your glass cutter (or jigsaw if you’ve used plexiglass) and round out the edges of the glass panel to be the same shape that you’ve used as a template in the previous steps.

9. Clean the cubes a LOT - they will be very sandy. And then spray them with whichever colour you like, but just make sure it is SHINY!

10. And then all that’s left to do is place the glass on top of the cubes! Voila!

I am so in love with this coffee table, and I hope you are, too!
